WonderCon '11: ThunderCats

Once the ThunderCats panel began, WonderCon had become ThunderCon. On the panel were producers Michael Jelenic and Ethan Spaulding, art director Dan Norton, and the great Larry Kenney, who was the voice of the original Lion-O and is Claudus in the new series. The first-ever panel for the new ThunderCats needed to be started off right, so Larry Kenney said it like no one else can, "Thunder! Thunder! Thunder! ThunderCats! Hoooooo!" Larry said it was the last time he would ever say it. He wanted to retire it because with the new cartoon coming out, it was now Will Friedle's (voice of Lion-O in the new series) time.

Dan Norton, Larry Kenney, Ethan Spaulding, and Michael Jelenic talk up the greatness of ThunderCats.

They showed off a brand new trailer for WonderCon, which nicely made its way to the internet soon after. It's right here for you to watch because it's awesome.

Yep, freaking awesome (Well, it looks like all the WonderCon trailers are becoming un-embeddable. Sorry, maybe you can find it elsewhere.). After the huge applause and cheering, the panel continued with slides of stills and art from the new show. As the slides came and went the panelists would talk about what was on-screen or anything about the new show, with fan Q&A not too far behind. Because panels can rapidly switch from subject to subject, here is a fairly chronological list of things said during the panel and some images from it that will be a part of the awesomeness that you just watched.

-The new ThunderCats has been a work-in-progress for about the last ten years. A previous reboot was tried to go with the WildStorm comics, but it didn't end up happening.

-With any kind of reboot, the new series takes things from the original, but creates its own mythology around it. In the original series, Thundera and Third Earth were different planets, but in the new series Thundera is now a kingdom on Third Earth, separated from the outside world. After Thundera is destroyed, however, the remaining Thundercats will be forced to live in the outside world.

-A slide of a Mumm-Ra stone sculpture on a wall came on-screen and Larry said, "I could still kick his ass."

-Snarf will be voiced in Japan. Snarf will say "Snarf" at times, but will also make "alien cat-like" sounds.

-The first season will be 26 episodes and there will be a total of 52 episodes for the whole story. Larry said he'd like to see the new show beat the 125 episodes of the original, so here's hoping that it actually happens.

-The Thunder Tank was a difficult thing for them to approach because how could they possibly improve upon it? They feel like they were able to accomplish it, though.

-A slide of Cheetara appeared and Larry said, "She is the original Thundercats ho." The audience exploded in laughter.

-The new series uses a combination of 2D and 3D animation, but they do not want to overuse the 3D.

-Lion-O will be aged. They said that it's probably a spoiler after they said it. Anyone who doesn't like the teenage Lion-O, at some point he will become older like the original Lion-O, so stop complaining. Larry talked a little about how in a few episodes Lion-O was de-aged so he had to sound like a younger version. He then said in the young Lion-O voice, "Well gee Snarf."

-Larry said, "I still have the original leotard and was going to wear it, but..." The panelists discussed that they wanted to ditch the weird outfits of the original and make more sensible ones. They like their ThunderCats in pants.

-Larry said he would have found some way to stop the show from getting made if he felt like the ThunderCats were being screwed-up. It's getting made, so Larry must think it's great then; that's probably a good sign.

-Snarf was compared to Chewbacca and R2-D2. Han Solo can understand Chewbacca's noises, Luke can understand R2-D2's beeps and boops, so Lion-O will be able to understand Snarf's noises.

-There will be a new Sky Cutter and the Burbles will be back.

-Somehow the panelists got into joking about the "samoflange" outtake. If you don't know it, look it up, it's hilarious.

-A fan asked about anything regarding Silverhawks. Larry did the voice of Bluegrass and lapsed into his voice for a line or two. Jelenic told us to keep an eye out. Interesting.

-We will see the staple of villains returning, but Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman will not be the Larry, Curly, and Moe like they were in the original.

-Any other changes to the ThunderCats? Larry remarked about Cheetara's boob job and Dan said she was an anorexic ho. In all seriousness, many other changes were made to differentiate the characters from one another. In the original, all the characters were the same height and build, so if they were silhouetted, you may not know who was who. Panthro was made much larger than everyone else, so he's the strongest. They wanted to change the color palette a little so not all the characters used the same colors.  Larry then made yet another Cheetara joke and said she has arthritis.

-4ºC was actually easy to get involved. They were very eager about the ThunderCats and were on board with the project very early.

-A few previously unknown voice actors were announced with Clancy Brown as Grune, Robin Atkins Downes as Mumm-Ra, and a joke about Charlie Sheen as Snarf.

-Something else that is different is that some of the cats will have tails and some won't. Apparently it's a societal thing in Thundera, which is why we'll see Wily Kit and Wily Kat with tails.

-The characters will be more cat-like in their movements and make cat sounds, like a hiss, at times.

-Lynx-O Bengali, and Pumyra will be in the show at some point.

Throughout the panel I was wondering if that was the actual last time that Larry would say Lion-O's famous ThunderCats call. However, the moderator tried to get him to say it once more to close out the panel, but Larry didn't do it. Hmm, did I actually just hear the final "ThunderCats Ho" 45 minutes ago? If so, then it was amazing to have heard his final one in person.
