-Mforma/Activision (2005) -Low-end played on a Motorola 265. High-end played on a Sanyo 8300.
Summary: Oh, what an unlucky girl. She keeps getting devoured by Venom at her office building every day.
Ultimate Spiderman on the cell phone shares one thing with its bigger console brethren: you can play as Spiderman or Venom. The rest of the game is a boring mess. The mobile version of Ultimate Spiderman is a side scrolling platformer, but it seems more limited than other side scrolling games on phones. While the two characters have a couple different abilities, such as Spiderman’s swing and Venom’s super jump, they play pretty much the same. Their goals in the game are also the same. Spiderman must save five citizens from being eaten by Venom in ten minutes. Venom must eat five citizens in ten minutes. And that is the only objective in the game. The stages never get more challenging either, like rescue ten citizens in five minutes; it stays the same in every stage. There are also no “citizens.” There is just one girl. Once the girl is eaten or saved she just pops up in another part of the stage as the next citizen needed to be saved. Plus, in order to eat the girl Venom must beat up Spiderman, otherwise his tentacle capture move won’t even work. The stages are a bland mix of a street, office building, and construction site. The graphics are rather bland and the sound consists of typical, crappy phone sounds. If you want to play a better version of Ultimate Spiderman go rent a console version.
The high-end version of Ultimate Spiderman is a slightly better experience than the low-end mess I played earlier. The high-end version features improved and crisper visuals, more foes, and a greater challenge by having to rescue or devour more office girl clones in constricting time limits. The sounds are not much better, though. The added villains help to populate the previously barren streets of what is supposedly New York and gives Spiderman more fist fodder than just Venom. There are a couple of thugs, the Shocker, and the Green Goblin. Venom must now face off against cops while he tries to eat up those pesky women. The goal of rescuing a number of citizens is more difficult thanks to them, but at least it spices up the gameplay a little. With the added villains, I can’t understand why there wasn’t at least on other citizen character model added. I’m so sick of having to rescue this same stupid girl over and over. While the high-end version is better, it still isn’t a great game. Scores: Ultimate Spiderman (Mobile low-end): 3.5 Ultimate Spiderman (Mobile high-end): 5.5 -Shawn |
