Star Wars: Battlefront Mobile

-THQ Wireless (2005)

-Played on a Motorola Razr

Summary:

Set up your Star Wars figures on a shelf. Start throwing rocks at them. You are now having more fun than if you played this game.

My Thoughts:

The Star Wars Battlefront games on the consoles are lots of fun. You can team-up with or against your friends and strangers in epic battles across the Star Wars universe and its timelines using various characters and vehicles. I was excited to download Battlefront on a phone. I knew it would be far less then the console versions, but I held up my hopes in that the game would be something fun. The force failed me on this one.

Battlefront Mobile is nothing more than a glorified shooting gallery. Your character, be it Imperial, Rebel, Republic, or Separatist, is in the foreground facing away from you. The background is that of some outpost, base, battleground, or what have you on one of fifteen planets or spaceships from the six movies. The enemies will pop up from behind parts of the scenery and you’ll have to move the reticule over them and shoot as fast as you can before they shoot you. A simple interface, yes, but the game is absolutely no fun.

The reticule seemed to move too slow and my button presses didn't always register. Being able to get into vehicles helped because their firepower is much greater, making stages easier. I tried as best as I could however, I don't think whatever side I was fighting on at the time gained any ground when I was playing.

Battlefront is known for its multiplayer and Mobile has it, sort of. You see, you never actually fight against other players; rather your progress in the shooting galleries affects the overall tide of war. If you are a stormtrooper and can continually claim victory in your battles, the Empire will gain ground and you will be able to see that the amount of a planet each side claims will be slightly adjusted throughout your gameplay.

While it is a nifty way to kind of have multiplayer, the game suffers greatly from the amount of time it spends accessing the network. Our networks and phones are light years behind Japan’s, so making a game that constantly requires it is a brave decision. The load times are also horrendous. You’ll be spending more time just waiting to select a mission or get into one then you will actually playing the game. There were more than a few instances when the loading or network access would take over two minutes to complete. And I was even in an area with full bars.

The locales and the characters in the game look good, although are a bit flat at times. The music is tolerable, but you can only take so much toned-down Star Wars music. I'll give THQ credit for the good graphics and nice selection of planets and characters. I'll also give them credit for attempting a pseudo-multiplayer game, but it just isn't something that worked decently enough. I think Battlefront Mobile would have been much better had the game been more of a top-down or side-scrolling action game instead of a shooting gallery. Then maybe the constant network access and loading might have been worth sitting through.

Score: 3.0
