The New Clone Wars
While at Star Wars Celebration IV, one of the best things there (aside from dozens of nerdy chicks in gold bikini costumes), was a panel discussion for the CG animated The Clone Wars series. It left such an impression on us that a single viewpoint wouldn't be sufficient to cover such a big event for Star Wars: The Clone Wars series, so we've gone ahead and compiled our quick thoughts from the panel. Paul's thoughts: I've got to admit, that I wasn't too fired up about the Star Wars Animated series before going to this panel. After being burned from Star Wars for the last few years I was a little weary. That changed when the director, Dave Filoni, was introduced. This guy is a hardcore Star Wars fan, he's so hardcore that he dresses up as the alien Jedi Plo Kloon on occasion. It was clear that this guy knows Star Wars and he's the best kind of person to have a guiding hand for this series. After a little video that showed the crew that is working on the series, they went into some Q&A that was rather uneventful as they are very secretive about the project right now. However, they were able to show a mini-trailer of sorts and it was ball-blistering awesome. Seriously, this thing is the cat's ass times ten to the max. I had to change my metaphorical pants twice I got so excited. While no story elements were revealed, the trailer was heavy on action and showed only a couple of the main characters like Anakin, and Padme, and was more focused on clone troopers kicking ass or getting their ass kicked. It completely won me over and I can't wait for this series to come out, which is like a million years from now. Shawn's thoughts: My fandom for things Star Wars has been on a fairly steady decline since Episode 1, but now I am truly excited about something Star Wars again. I loved Cartoon Network's animated Clone Wars series as it was ten times better than the prequel trilogy. When I first heard of a new animated project that would be all 3-D, I thought it would be one of those things that I would watch, but probably not actually enjoy, because it was coming directly from LucasFilm. Before they showed the trailer, Dave Filoni said they just got approval from George Lucas a few days ago to show a little footage. Was it true or just a publicity thing? Who knows, and who cares because the trailer was indeed "ball-blistering awesome," as Paul so perfectly put it. It was so awesome it rocked my socks off into the face of a guy sitting ten rows up who exploded with my excitement. When the trailer finished playing most of the crowd gave a standing ovation and because of it, the footage was rewound and shown again. It was even better the second time. The look of the characters is the exact middle-ground of the slick Clone Wars style and the realism of the films and there is so much to like in the trailer. Trust us, The Clone Wars is the big Star Wars thing that you've been waiting for. They told us we were special at the panel and said we would be the only ones to see this footage, but apparently they lied because The Clone Wars trailer is available on StarWars.com. It's better this way so that everyone can get a glimpse of its awesomeness, but at least we got to see it on a theater-sized screen. - Paul / Shawn - 05/29/07 |
