-Sega Mobile (2006) -Played on a Samsung A930
Summary A blue hedgehog whips up some attitude as he saves colorful creatures from a robotic fat man with an enormous moustache. My Thoughts:
It seems like just about everything from the original game has made it into the mobile version. Every stage, enemy, ring, tree, spike, bouncer, overly cute forest animal, and secret is here. The graphics are nearly identical to the Genesis original. And even though the music has been downgraded a bit to compensate for a mobile phone’s lacking sound capacities, all the music is still there. What is even more surprising is that even the speed is here. You can’t have Sonic without his trademark speed. It’s not quite as fast as the Genesis with its blast processing power, but Sonic’s speed is done quite well on the phone. I am still getting over how fast and smooth the game ran. Most of the times platforming translations such as this turn out to be pretty slow, but not this one. There is no save option, but there is a stage select. However, I found it extremely odd that I was able to choose any stage right away after I downloaded the game. I was able to just skip right to the final boss and beat it without having to unlock or play through the rest of the game. Control is almost always an issue in platforming ports, but not so with Sonic. Sonic can run, jump and spin as he did on the Genesis. It will take a few minutes to get used to the control using the phones directional and/or key pad, but once you do you’ll be speeding through the stages in no time. It is probably recommend that you play with two hands, which is fine because it is entirely comfortable. However, if you are confident enough in your Sonic skills, you can play the game with one hand. Every mobile developer needs to use Sonic the Hedgehog as an example for the next platforming port they try to do. Now that Sega has shown us that a near perfect port is possible on a phone, there is no reason that other ports shouldn’t be just as good.
