SDCC '12: Syd Mead at the Sega Arcade

Somehow, Sega got the legendary Syd Mead to do a signing for them in the Sega Arcade at SDCC. How often does Syd Mead do signings? Probably not very often, so this was most likely a once-in-a-lifetime thing for everyone in attendance. If you don't know, Syd Mead is a concept designer and visual futurist for such great films like Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, Short Circuit, the upcoming Elysium, and many others. He was at the Sega Pop Up Arcade to sign limited edition prints of the USS Sulaco from Aliens. The print was free and his autograph was free, all out of the goodness of Sega's heart... and to help promote Aliens: Colonial Marines. Syd Mead would also sign an additional item that fans brought with them, so this was a rare chance to get something else autographed. As for Syd Mead himself, well he was all smiles and was looking sharp in his white suit and hat.

Syd Mead happily signing at the Sega Arcade and totally rocking the white suit.

The Sega Pop Up Arcade was located in a suite of a condo across the street from the convention center. The actual arcade had demos areas for Aliens: Colonial Marines and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. There was a nice line for Aliens while I was there, but not so much for Sonic. I'm personally very excited for both games. I've been anticipating Colonial Marines since it was first announced a long time ago and I really enjoyed the first Sonic racing game. Unfortunately, I just didn't have time to stop and try out either of them with everything else I had to try and do at SDCC. To keep the Aliens awesomeness strong, Sega had huge the Alien Queen prop on display at the arcade. Outside of the arcade were the Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed NASCAR car and Sonic the Hedgehog statue.

It still boggles my mind that Sega was able to get Syd Mead to do a signing for them. Great job, Sega.

I love that a face Hugger is on the DO NOT TOUCH sign. Terrific placement.

The incredible and huge Alien Queen.

The Aliens: Colonial Marines demo area and part of the line to play it.

There wasn't much of a line for the new Sonic Racing, but I really liked the first one, so hopefully this one is just as great.

Can the Sonic Racing Transformed NASCAR transform into a better car?

How about an Alien cameo in the Sonic racing game, Sega?
