SDCC '09: Sir Om-Nom-Nom Nomed Comic-con

Sir Om-Nom-Nom examines his new lush home.

One of the items that I was really gunning for at Comic-con this year was Capcom's Lost Planet 2 Salamander plush. The thing was, you couldn't buy it; you had to win it. The Salamander was officially given the name Sir Om-Nom-Nom by the Capcom Unity members a couple weeks ago and was called by that name countless times at Comic-con. One Capcom booth guy I talked to didn't know the name of it and when I called it Sir Om-Nom-Nom he abruptly stopped the conversation and said, "Wait. What did you call it?"

To get a raffle ticket you had to play the Lost Planet 2 demo at the Capcom booth. It was a four-player co-op demo where the mission was to kill the giant Akrid Salamander boss, the original in-game version of Sir Om-Nom-Nom himself (itself?). I played the game each day I was at Comic-con, which was four times total. The demo was not easy and few teams were actually able to kill the Salamander boss.

Very few Sir Om-Nom-Nom's were available at the 'con. There was a raffle each day except the Preview Night. At each raffle, Capcom gave away ten 16-inch Salamanders to lucky winners. I figured there would be some handed out at the Lost Planet 2 panel and I was right. Ten were handed out during the panel, so there were about 50 of the plushies, unless Capcom gave out more elsewhere. The 16" Sir Om-Nom-Nom wasn't alone, though. There were also three giant 3-foot long Salamander plushies that were won at three of the raffles.

During the raffles, tons of people crowded around the Capcom booth. The crowd had to wait until the Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 tournament was over before the raffle began, much to the annoyance of some people. I didn't mind because we were able to witness some great MVC2 battles on the large monitors. Once the raffles started, they went quick. When a number was called, the Capcom person would only wait a few seconds to see if someone had the winning ticket. I actually had to cut out of the Capcom 2009 Line-up panel early to make one of the raffles on time; There was no way I going to miss one of my numbers being called. I was a little surprised how many people decided not to show up to win a Salamander, but that just meant more chances for me... and the other fans, of course. On Saturday, my last day at Comic-con, my team of four managed to kill the Salamander boss which granted us each an extra raffle ticket. The 4 p.m. Saturday raffle was the last thing I was going to do at Comic-con before heading back home.

Maybe it was because my team had completed the demo that day because the Capcom Gods smiled upon me and deemed me worthy of my own Sir Om-Nom-Nom. Or it was just random luck, whatever, I won a Sir Om-Nom-Nom and it was awesome. It wasn't the 3-footer, but still, it was frakking great. My 2009 Comic-con journey had ended with a massive win.

My sir-Om-Nom-Nom was still vacuum-sealed, so it was flat and nom-minty fresh. Once I got it home I opened it and it fluffed right up to normal noming size. I love it. My current obsession with my Sir- Om-Nom-Nom is far from over, so I'll have some more photos of it later on. For now, enjoy these first shots of my Sir Om-Nom-Nom.

Sir Om-Nom-Nom is vacuum sealed for maximum nomness.

Yes, Sir Om-Nom-Nom, the plants are good for noming.
