G.I. Joe - SDCC07
G.I. Joe 25th Anniversary, Prototypes, and
Customs.

Nothing says
"badass" quite like a chainsaw with flames. |
If you didn't know, this year marks G.I Joe: A
Real American Hero's 25th anniversary of fighting the vile forces of Cobra.
Hasbro has been celebrating the year with new 3 and 3/4-inch that bring more
realistic detail and sculpting to the G.I Joe line. In short, these are
basically the best G.I Joe figures ever. Some of these figures are already out
in stores if you can find them. At the 'con, Hasbro's booth, which was
frequented by the real Sergeant Slaughter, had many new upcoming figures on
display next to their prototypes.
On display was the next wave of single-carded
figures that should be available in October. The Joes get new figures of Beach
Head, Lady Jaye, and Shipwreck. Cobra and the Dreadnoks will have figures of
Zartan, Buzzer, Serpentor, the Cobra Red Ninja, and Firefly. there was also a
new Cobra 5-pack that contained Cobra Commander dressed in black, a new Storm
Shadow, A Cobra Trooper, a Cobra Driver, and a Cobra Air Trooper. If you played
with Joe figures when you were a kid these figures will make you seriously think
about collecting them again.
Also on display was the G.I. Joe Convention's
exclusive figure set for this year. The set is called "Tanks for the Memories"
and contains seven Joes and eight Cobra troops. Seven of those Cobra troops are
female Cobra Troopers. The G.I. Joe convention's exclusives usually go for big
bucks on eBay, and with a set that contains seven female Cobra troops the price
will no doubt skyrocket. What G.I. Joe wouldn't want a squad of female Cobra
troops?
As a special surprise, Hasbro had a number of
custom figures on display. A Hasbro rep mentioned, with a little hesitance, that
there were no plans to release the custom figures as another wave of 25th
Anniversary figures and that they were made specifically for the show. With how
good the customs figures looked, Hasbro would be fools not to mass produce them
and release them at retail. They fit in perfectly with the other 25th
Anniversary figures.
The custom figures were displayed next to the
character's first figure from the 80s. The customs consisted of were a Range
Viper, an extra sexy Zarana, the weird looking bird-man Raptor, Leatherneck,
Shockwave, Night Creeper, Lifeline, a more proportionate Sergeant Slaughter,
Pythona, Airtight, and a super kick-ass Alley viper. Hopefully Hasbro got a good
reaction to the figures to actually produce them, or they were keeping their
cool and will announce that they are they next couple waves.
Below are G.I. Joe pics from the Hasbro booth.
