Optimus Prime Steam Locomotive Custom

The Transformers Evolutions: Heats of Steel comic mini-series took the Transformers and placed them in the 19th century. Transformers character were re-imagined as 19th century vehicles like locomotives, armored steam ships, and biplanes. Unfortunately, the story itself wasn't very good. It featured Bumblebee and a few other Transformers meeting Mark Twain, Jules Vern, and John Henry. For some reason these famous people were all hanging out together and Shockwave needed to steal money from a train to build some weapon. Yeah, it was bad. What Hearts of Steel did do well were the character re-designs. Some characters that did not make it into the story had concept sketches on the covers or in the back of the book. Optimus Prime and Megatron were both not in the story, but I'm not so sure the comic would have benefited if they had been.

Hasbro never made any toys of the 19th century Transformers, but two chaps by the names of Griffith and Flickr user frenzy_rumble took it upon themselves to make Optimus Prime as a steam locomotive based on the concept drawings from an issue of Hearts of Steel. This Optimus figure is amazing. It transforms, has the "trailer," and it looks just like an Optimus should. They even went the extra mile and made a Nemesis Prime version, painted in black. Seeing this makes me wish Hasbro had actually made a few Hearts of Steel figures. Go to frenzy_rumble's Flickr page for a ton of photos of Hearts of Steel Optimus and Nemesis. (via Tomopop)

Optimus Prime and Nemesis Prime as the steam machines of old. Jolly good show there, chaps.

Here is the original art from Hearts of Steel, for comparison. The custom is just perfect.
