Tiny ninjas tempt you to do evil deeds.

My Thoughts

The prospect of playing the first Ninja Gaiden on a cell phone intrigued me. The original is a revered classic from the NES era. How can you really go wrong with Ninja Gaiden, one of the greatest ninja series ever created?

It turns out you can, but first I’ll say what’s great about the game. The graphics look just as they did on the NES and the sounds are pretty decent. Ryu’s acrobatic ninja jumping and slicing sword antics are easy to perform with the phone’s controls. All the enemies from baseball bat wielding brawlers, badass boxers, evil ninjas, and dogs are all present. The challenge of the original also remains as the Ninja Gaiden games have never been a cakewalk. The game preserves the cinematics of the original presented in tiny letterboxed form. There is also a stage select feature so you don’t have to complete the game in one sitting.

There is one thing that absolutely kills this mobile version of Ninja Gaiden; it’s missing most of the game. All that the game contains are level 1-1, 1-2, and 1-3 with the ending boss battle against the machete wielding Jason look-a-like. I hate it when game companies split up a single game into multiple chapters. You have to pay for and download the other chapters to play the complete game and is one of the worst business decisions for mobile games. When I initially downloaded the game I thought that the “Episode 1” part of the title meant that it was the first game and that Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3 would come out at some point, but no. It’s just the first game chopped up into miniscule bits.

If you love Ninja Gaiden so much that you’ll pay for as many chapters as are released then by all means go get it. It’s a very accurate translation. As for me, I can’t stand spending lots of money for a cell phone game that should only be one download and is the sole reason my score is so low.

Score: 5.0
