Weekly News Roundup: 05/25/2007

We will be at Star Wars Celebration IV in LA this weekend, so we may not hit our usual Sunday news roundup. Instead, here is a special early Friday edition.

Games

In his early days, even Godzilla did a few movies he wasn't proud of and insists it was just for pay.

  • The countdown on the Godzilla: Unleashed website ended on the 23rd, revealing that the upcoming game will have twenty-three playable monsters. Hmm, twenty-three on the 23rd, what a crazy coincidence. The site has digital cards showing which monsters will appear in the Wii game, yet only four are currently shown. Most notable is the super cool re-designed Gigan from Godzilla: Final Wars

  • The newest issue of Nintendo Power shows that Geometry Wars is coming to the DS and Wii. Titled Geometry Wars: Galaxies, the games will feature all the content from the Xbox Live versions plus a new "extensive single player campaign" and some sort of multiplayer mode.

  • Star Wars and Legos are coming back in Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. The game includes both original titles with a few new characters, levels, and Force powers. Saga will be out soon-ish for the PS3, 360, and Wii. There is also a Nintendo DS version which is actually an entirely different and brand new game.

  • More good news, Nintendo fans. Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed at Nintendo's Media Summit that Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass will be out by the end of this year.

  • Hold it! Capcom Japan announced development of Ace Attorney 5. Meanwhile, in America, Phoenix Wright fans are still anxiously awaiting part 3.

  • Grand Theft Auto IV will be getting a snazzy $90 limited edition. It will include an art book, keychain, selected soundtrack CD, and duffle bag in a metal safety deposit box.

Movies

  • The Onimusha movie, based on the awesome samurai games of the same name, is slated for a December 2009 release. The movie will be directed by Christophe Gans, the man that brought the much-better-than-expected Silent Hill to the big screen. Production of Onimusha begins in February in China.

  • A King of Fighters movie is getting ready to be shot next year by Gordon Chan, director of The Medallion and Fist of Legend. Live action fighting game movies usually don't turn out too great, but it can't be worse than DOA: Dead or Alive, can it?

Games

"A Bastiodon for a Pikachu and a Scyther. It's a fair trade. Now let's calmly take out our DS' and trade some Pokèmon."

  • John Woo's Stranglehold will be released as a Collector's Edition that may very well be worth getting. The PLAYSTATION 3 collector's edition of Stranglehold will have an HD version of Hard Boiled on the same Blu-ray disc. No word as to whether the film will be in 1080p or not. The Xbox 360 version will also have a collector's edition, but Midway hasn't yet announced what will be in it. Whatever it is, it probably can't compete with a Hi-Def Hard Boiled.

  • Eidos and GameTap have teamed-up to bring something special to Tomb Raider fans. GameTap has already begun airing a comprehensive Tomb Raider retrospective video series. On July 10th GameTap will air a new Tomb Raider animated series titled Re/Visioned where famous animators and artists present their own take on the series. Re/Visioned will have episodes by Jim Lee, David Alvarez, Warren Ellis, Brian Pulido, Peter Chung, Cully Hammer, Christos Gage, Gail Simone, and Michael Stackpole. What's even cooler is that you don't need to be a GameTap subscriber; you will be able to watch the series for free. Head to GameTap's Tomb Raider site for extras and preview images.

  • Gameloft, known for their cell phone games, is remaking the original Prince of Persia for Xbox Live Arcade. Gameloft has a solid track record for the Prince's mobile adventures, so this should turn out great. Along with the visual overhaul, Gameloft is said to be adding a few more enemies and puzzles. Hopefully they won't mess too much with perfection, though. Most notably, the Prince now resembles the Prince from the Sands of Time trilogy and no longer wears his turban.

  • Blizzard and RTS fans everywhere busted a nut this week with the reveal of StarCraft 2. Just listen to the crowd cheer during the very first trailer. There is no release date yet, but it will be for the PC and Mac.

  • Gamers anxiously awaiting the Halo 3 beta on May 16th had to wait fourteen hours longer because of a downloading problem, supposedly with Xbox Live. An update was issued for Crackdown later that day and now Halo 3 beta players will be Halo-ing it up to the extended date of June 10th. Bungie also announced an official release date for Halo 3 on September 25th.

  • Another Namco Museum is on the way, except this one is actually different than the other fifty or so Namco Museums. Namco Museum Remix for the Wii will feature completely new versions of classic games that all involve Pac-Man. Pac-Man gets remixed in Galaga, Rally-X, Pac 'n Roll, Pac-Motos, and Gator Panic all with new graphics and Wii controls.

  • Capcom axed Clover and now Flagship will be dissolved. Flagship was responsible for the Legend of Zelda games of The Minish Cap, A Link to the Past on GBA, the Oracle of Ages / Seasons, as well as some Kirby games. The employees will still to continue to work for Capcom in the same capacity however, so the elimination of the studio is odd.

Miscellaneous

  • Fujikyu Highland Park in Japan will construct a life-size 18 meter Gundam this Summer. It might only lie on its back, but who cares, it's a LIFE-SIZE GUNDAM. The Gundam is the RX-78, the original Gundam piloted by the original Gundam complainer Amarou.

Television

  • The Terminator TV series, The Sarah Conner Chronicles, is well underway... wait... there's a Terminator TV series? How in the bloody hell did we miss this news? Well anyway, Ain't it Cool News has gathered some videos if you're interested in watching what looks like a professionally done fan film.

Aegis Wing Details

Aegis Wing looks to be a fully featured shooter complete with lots 'o' missiles and pulsating red space balls.

Microsoft shot out a press release today with all the details concerning the free Xbox Live Arcade shooter Aegis Wing that drops this Wednesday (5/16). Aegis Wing is a completely new game that was developed by three Microsoft interns. It is a 2-D side-scrolling shooter and seems to have a couple little cool ideas to add to the 2-D shooter genre.

The six stage Aegis Wing will support up to four players simultaneously on one console or over Xbox Live. Not bad for a free shooter. In some kind of leap in space fighter combiner technology, all four of the brightly colored ships can mount one another to gain the "turret" ability or increase power of the "Super Weapons." If my assumptions are correct, then the turret ability could help out gamers that aren't so good at shooters to beat the game if the difficulty is fairly high. The turret ability could allow the good-at-shooters player to fly around and avoid everything while the not-so-good-at-shooters player fires away.

As you can tell by the screenshots the visuals look pretty nice, but that should probably be expected for a 2-D game on the 360. A full symphonic soundtrack will also accompany you on your mission. The only bad news about Aegis Wing is that it will only be available for a limited time. Since I have yet to purchase a 360, I'll just have to force Paul to download it on Wednesday. Unless you are a total anti-2-D gaming jerk you'll download it as well. Hopefully Aegis Wing will still be available by the time the quieter 65nm Elites start hitting store shelves. Plus, maybe the download success of the game will prompt Microsoft to release other intern developed and free XBLA games in the future.

Games

The lack of rocket packs in dynastic China forced Gundams to ride into battle on bicycles.

  • The Japanese PLAYSTATION 3 game Gundam Musou is officially coming to America as Dynasty Warriors: Gundam. The name change is perfect as it tells you exactly what you're getting. While the title may turn off Dynasty Warriors purists, it could also reel in non-Gundam people that are Dynasty Warriors fans. The game is coming this Fall, not only to the PS3, but also the Xbox 360 so everyone can get their Chinese Gundam Dynasty battles on.

  • Namco is developing a brand new Soul Calibur game, called Soul Calibur Legends, for the Wii. It will be a third person action adventure. The tale of soul and swords will be eternally retold on your Wii... sometime.

  • Square-Enix is re-re-re-releasing another Final Fantasy game, but it's really different this time... really. Final Fantasy IV DS (FFII from the US SNES) is receiving the same fancy-pants 3-D treatment that Final Fantasy III got on the DS. That's nifty and all, but we're still waiting for a regular 2-D re-release of the original Final Fantasy III. Some of us still like 2-D. If you're sick of re-releases there is also an original FF game for the PSP called Final Fantasy: Dissidia.

  • Wait, Square-Enix does have something new that isn't Final Fantasy. Seriously. They revealed The Last Remnant, a new RPG that uses the Unreal 3 engine. If all goes well, the game will be released simultaneously on the PS3 and 360 in the US and Japan.

  • Sony online Entertainment is developing a game based on Stephen Chow's crazy film Kung Fu Hustle. Awesome, but not, because it's only for China.

  • Tecmo announced a new Rygar for the Wii, currently called Project Rygar. The arms get tired just thinking of all the diskarmor swinging that will be needed for the game.

  • Arcade Renaissance has deduced that we are one step closer to seeing an official announcement for the shooter Karous on the Wii. The game would come from publisher O3 Entertainment, however, we still haven't seen the often delayed Radio Allergy for the GameCube yet. What's happening with the Allergy, O3?

DVD

  • Free chocolate! According to The Digital Bits, The Upright Citizens Brigade: Season 2 will finally, finally, be on DVD on 7/31. Hold on, don't get your panties in a bundle just yet because it's only a strong rumor for right now. Perhaps if we look into the bucket of truth we will know for sure.

  • Fans of space cowboys, rejoice! 80s cartoon Bravestarr is coming to DVD this summer! Paul's favorite character was Sheriff Bravestarr's horse that could walk on two legs and wield a space shot gun. Hey, don't look at him like that. He couldn't have been the only kid that loved this show.

Movies

  • Thankfully this is just a rumor at the moment, but LatinoReview.com stated that Jessica Biel may get the role of Chun Li in the new Street Fighter movie. The 100% not at all Chinese Jessica Biel playing the 100% Chinese Chun Li? Hopefully, if she has any role in the film, it's for a different character. Somehow, the days of Van Damme as Guile are starting to look better.

  • Actress Jamie Pressley isn't too upset that DOA: Dead or Alive still hasn't made it into theaters yet. The finished film was never even screened for the actors (if you've seen it you know why, it could still be lurking around Google Video if you search hard enough). The newest release date is June 22, but if the movie gets pushed back again, don't be surprised.

  • It was announced this week that a new batch of Terminator films will be made. Terminator 4 is expected to hit theaters in 2009. Be afraid Terminator fans, none of the original Terminator creative team members are on this, except for the script writers from Terminator 3.

  • George Lucas dropped a bomb that he plans on making two more live action Star Wars films! Oh, they're hour long television films... Well, I guess they can't be any worse than the Ewok television films... can they?

Television

  • Rumor has it that the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica will end at Season 4. Paul says it really doesn't come as a surprise as they pretty much screwed the pooch on that last one. Shawn is disappointed, but knew it had to end sometime.

Miscellaneous Halo

  • If you haven't yet bought any kind of MP3 player and you're a super Halo nut, Microsoft has a Halo 3 Zune in June. That's cool, we guess, but our money is already going to the Halo 3 Legendary Edition, so our Halo-related funds are limited.

Weekly News Roundup: 05/06/2007

Games

May we introduce a by-product of Ken Kutaragi's future PlayStation 6 network, possibly to be deployed with the PS4.

  • Ken Kutaragi may no longer be with Sony, but that won't stop him from designing the PlayStation 4... or the PlayStation 5 and 6. Apparently the systems "will merge into the network" which is most likely an advanced artificial intelligence with an army super robots ready to take over the world.

  • New details on Taiko Drum Master for the DS were beat out of the walls this week. The game will support four players with only one game card and you can customize your drum by shoving helpless animals inside it.

  • LucasArts officially unveiled their future civil war game, Fracture. It's a war of cyber soldiers versus genetic soldiers in the year 2161. The game features Terrain Deformation, which sounds like the next gen version of Red Faction's Geo-Mod system.

  • It seems as though the Xbox 360's inability to guarantee that it will hard drive is limiting the 360 version of GTAIV, while the PS3 is getting a little praise for having the drive and Blu-Ray. Although, Rockstar's creative VP Dan Houser does state that about the 360 and PS3, "both have their own particular pleasures and pains," so neither seems perfect.

Movies

  • The trailer for Rush Hour 3 finally hit the web this week. Our prediction: Comedy Gold. We're so looking forward to the part where the Chinese guy says something that sounds funny because he has an accent or when the black guy acts funky.

  • If you feel like torturing yourself for a minute, the trailer for the straight-to-DVD BloodRayne II: Deliverance has been posted. We didn't think movies could get much worse than the first BloodRayne, but vampire cowboys just proved us wrong.

DVD

  • A film dedicated to Star Wars fandom, The Force is Among Us, is available for preorder. As a special bonus, you can get a vial of sand from Tunisia with the preorder. I really can't think of a more stupid and useless item than this for the Star Wars fanatic who has everything.
