The Monkey's News Box: 2/9/14

Movies / TV

  • Movie Grimlock is a dragon. That's what the general movie-going populace thinks Optimus is riding at the end of the Transformers: Age of Extinction Superbowl trailer. I've seen the trailer with a number of people and their comment at the end upon seeing Grimlock is always the same: "There's a dragon in it?" or "What's with the dragon?" or "Optimus riding a dragon?" or something similar using the word "dragon" or "dragons" including the two-headed one. None of these people are into Transformers like us fans, so when I told them it's Grimlock the Dinobot they would respond with, "Looks like a dragon." I agree that he looks like a Chinese dragon; It's those damn horns. A T-Rex doesn't have big horns. Until the word "Dinobots" is actually uttered in a trailer or the movie, non-Transformers people will keep thinking that Grimlock is a dragon.

"Me Grimlock am dragon now. Like playing ride 'em Autobot with puny Optimus Prime."

  • The first trailer for the live-action Patlabor: The Next Generation series came up. This is an original story in the Patlabor universe with the third generation of Patlabor. There will be seven episodes with the first in April and a full movie coming afterwards.

  • This might be a spoilery piece of casting news for Avengers: age of Ultron, but Paul Bettany will be Vision. Why is this spoilery? Because Bettany already voices JARVIS.

  • Seth Gordon will be directing the Uncharted movie. He previously directed The King of Kong, which is videogamey in a different way.

New Knuckles is just the worst.

  • Deception IV lets you make some pretty insane combo traps.

  • Lightning will have a Lara Croft outfit in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Lightning is in Lara's outfit, with the axe, and a riot shield. This is the closest you'll get to a Lara with pink hair..

  • The Square Enix Store has yet another exclusive game edition with the Drakengard 3 Collector's Edition. This includes a prequel novella, the original Japanese box art, a 2 CD soundtrack, a double-sided poster, and three stages of DLC depending when you pre-order.

  • Amazon has acquired Double Helix, developer of the new Strider and the new Killer Instinct. Because of this, Microsoft has to move the further development of Killer Instinct to a different developer. Hmm, maybe you just should have released a complete game to begin with.

  • Nendoroid Solid Snake is preparing for some tiny tactical espionage action. The concept art for tiny Snake was on display at Wonder Festival 2014 Winter.

Snake! You're head is huge!

  • Kotobukiya's revealed illustrations for the next Street Fighter and Tekken Bishoujo statues; Juri and Nina Williams, respectively. I think we knew about Juri already, but now we finally get to the the artwork. Nina's pose is now another spine-snapping ass-forward pose. The original art of her standing cool with the gun was better.

Bishoujo Juri looks fine, but Nina needs her old pose back, or at least one that isn't another ass-forward.

  • ThreeA has a Killzone Helghast Hazmat figure in the works according to a Q&A response from Ashley Wood. I'm sure it'll have LED red eyes to make it super awesome.

  • A Figma of Major Motoko Kusanagi is in the works. This one is based on her Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex appearance. It's just a prototype right now, but is already looking great.

  • It looks like Masterpiece Sunstorm might be a Toys 'R' Us exclusive, like many of the other Masterpiece Transformers.

Dragon Ball Z

  • After 30 years of Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama is finally writing a story about Goku's mother. Her name is Gine and her story will be a short bonus story packaged with the Jaco the Galatic Patrolman manga. Kind of crappy that Goku's mother is only in a short bonus story, but I guess it's better than never knowing.

  • It's-a S.H. Figuarts Mario! Bluefin Tamashii Nations Mario teases has ended, revealing the first super-articulated Mario figure. There will also be diorama playsets with bricks, question blocks, coins, pipes, Goombas, and Koopa shells. These are priced to move too, with Mario being $25 and the diorama sets at $20. Mario and the sets will be out in June.

I bet the first thing most fans do with the diorama sets is make World 1-1.

  • The next Lego Cuusoo set is the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters, just in time for Ghostbusters' 30th anniversary. This set looks incredible. It will include the four mini-figs of the Ghostbusters themselves plus Slimer. The original proposed set included the firehouse, but that won't be in the final set, which is probably good since the price of that would be huge.

  • Watch the Skeletor voice-actors Alan Oppenheimer and Brian Dobson play with Skeletor figures. It's one of the best things ever.

  • NECA's upcoming Battle Damage Knifehead in Pacific Rim series 3 will be larger than the series 1 figure, making it more in-scale with the Jaegers. They also shared a photo of the packaged Trespasser Kaiju from series 3.

  • Kidrobot is making a blind-boxed Mega Man figure line. There will be fourteen 3" figures, along with 7" figures of Mega Man and Proto Man, and key chains. The concept art looks good, but $10 for a blind-boxed item is a bit steep for me.

  • The Alien Big Chap is coming to the S.H. MonsterArts. It's looking good, but remember it'll be smaller and more expensive than the Alien figures NECA is putting out.

TV / Movies

  • The newest character addition to Star Wars: Rebels is a grumpy astromech droid named Chopper, or C1-10P. I'm digging what I see so far. Adding the arms from Ralph McQuarrie's original R2-D2 concept art was a great idea.

  • Empire Magazine had a huge X-Men: Days of Future Past character reveal with a whopping twenty-five interconnecting X-Men covers. The past Sentinel looks pretty rad, but I'm not so sure about the future Sentinel; maybe it'll look better on screen. It's a little sad that Rogue gets a cover even though her one scene in the movie was cut.

Past Sentinel is all retro-ish. And has eyes on its crotch.

  • The new live-action TMNT designs have been kind of revealed and they just look like bad stereotypes. Vincent from The Robots Pajamas really hit the stereotype nail on the turtle head. And apparently it's Ninja Turtles now, not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Are they not teenage or mutants in the movie?

  • Jesse Eisenberg will be Lex Luthor in that Superman / Batman movie. I'm sure he can be a good villain, but I didn't think they would go so young for the character. He almost seems too young. Meanwhile, Jeremy Irons will be Alfred, which is pretty damn cool.

  • A Sly Cooper movie is coming, but not until 2016. Plenty of time to steal donuts before then. Instead of the cel-shaded look, it'll be CGI, a brand new look for sly and the gang.

  • The Choose Your Own Adventure movie is happening. For this to actually happen there should be audience participation where everyone in the audience pushes a button to vote on what happens next. Some audiences will only get a 10-minute movie.

  • There's a new trailer for Earth Defense Force 2025! The giant insects have returned, but the E.D.F. has four new armor classes with the Ranger, Fencer, Air Raider, and Wing Diver. Earth Defense Force 2025 drops February 18th. E.D.F.! E.D.F.!

  • The Vita version of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma will have an exclusive beach scenario. Of course, the characters will be in swimsuits. Arc System Works really wants to sell that Vita version.

  • Pac-Man Museum is coming February 25th for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It has lots of Pac-games with Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Land, Pac & Pal, Pac-Mania, Pac-Attack, Pac-Man Remix, and Pac-Man Battle Royale. Buying the game before March 31st gets you Ms. Pac-Man for free.

Awesome Car
