Summary

A little man with a big drill loves to do some deep drilling.

My Thoughts

I had never played a Mr. Driller game before I tried it on the phone. Man, why did I wait so long. Mr. Driller is a simple yet addicting puzzle game starring a little man with a large, curiously placed drill. The object of Mr. Driller is to drill down through the multicolored blocks of earth and reach the goal distance. There are three distance modes that Mr. Driller can attempt to go down in: 500 meters, 1000, and unlimited. Each block is considered to be one meter high and the game can put you in panic mode fairly quickly. The controls are responsive though and it's easy to make quick movements when things get hectic.

If a few blocks of the same color are connected then all those blocks will disappear when Mr. Driller comes drilling. As Mr. Driller drills he will eventually have to move, or drill, to the side to avoid being crushed as the blocks will ultimately start to fall. Not all is lost when the blocks tumble. If four blocks of the same color touch while on the way down, they will also disappear, saving Mr. Driller from being squished. What’s great is when chain reactions of blocks disappear and Mr. Driller goes deeper without even having to use his mighty drill.

As Mr. Driller performs his favorite activity, he loses oxygen. His oxygen depletes faster the further down he progresses. Most likely he’ll have to make a few detours drilling to the side to obtain the oxygen tanks. There are also little hidden creatures that, when uncovered, give an extra life.

The graphics are vibrant and colorful. There is some cute music at the title screen and some good sound effects during play. Mr. Driller is an excellent puzzle game. I should have checked out the series sooner.

Score: 8.0
