E3 2007 Trailer Impressions
With E3 being much smaller and mostly invite only this year, less people got to experience the sub-E3 madness first hand. However, with Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network, and the good old internet serving up substantial helpings of trailers and press conference videos, there just doesn't seem to be a need to attend the not-quite-as-crowed convention. Everyone can watch everything from the comfort of their own favorite chair. Regardless, as someone who has attended past E3s, I feel I should in some way contribute. So, here are thoughts and impressions of many of the trailers that came out of E3 2007. Everyday Shooter - The name of this game is perfect. The visuals are impressive as they are simple and the game is a series of abstract shooters. This should be an immediate download when it's released. Silent Hill V - the Silent Hill V teaser is filled with fog... and that's about it. It has the main character saying that there are worse things than hell and that he chooses not to go home. It sounds like this guy might be gearing up for his own personal war against Silent Hill. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe - Fight Spider-Man's greatest enemies to turn them into your best friends. This takes the movies into stupid silly comical territory. I think I threw up in my mouth a little. Endless Ocean - I hate to sound negative because the graphics look pretty good, but is there a point to this? Am I going to be searching for treasure, sunken ships, or defending the oceanic life from the forces of evil? Oh, I can make friends with dolphins. That's fantastic. TimeShift - In TimeShift it looks like you'll be able to.. shift time, almost... split it, as it were. The mechs and future vehicles are cool, but maybe I'll just wait for a new TimeSplitters. Infamous - Infamous looks like a superhero game where you can make choices if he's bad or good. Maybe? Like a GTA, but you have superpowers and you're not a cop like in Crackdown. You fight big robots too, which is always welcomed. Warhawk - I kind of lost interest in Warhawk when it was announced that it would be multiplayer only. While it looks fun enough, I don't want to have to play against other people or every time I want to play a game. Perhaps the success of it will prompt an eventual single-player game. Haze - Hmm, is it just me or does the main character looks like Brad Pitt? Like the Brad Pitt from Fight Club after he shaves his head. Anyways, it's another FPS and you're a guy in armor with bright yellow markings to make you an easier target. Oh, you switched sides? That's kind of neat, I guess. At least you get to be Brad Pitt. Unreal Tournament III - Unreal Tournament with more vehicles. Good stuff? Probably. Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron - This is an exclusive title to the PSP and looks to be more Battlefront, but with customizable characters. This is probably something that should be released on every platform if they really want it to be successful, though. Silent Hill Origins - Isn't this the same trailer as last year? It starts off similarly, but then it shows an evil girl levitating. I am freaking out. Lair - Fly dragons as you would X-Wings and participate in epic dragon battles. You can even blow up bigger dragons due to the amount of fire stored up in their bellies from the winter.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Darth Vader's secret apprentice just killed a ton of people with that Star Destroyer trick. What I'd like to know is, if he is Darth Vader's apprentice, why is he killing off clone/storm troopers left an right? And if he learns from Vader, where the hell did Vader learn all these super ridiculous Force powers and why has he never used them? The game still looks cool and still has a horrible name. Fracture - The graphics don't seem as impressive as some other new games, but the terrain reformation looks like it will be a fun and rewarding gameplay addition. There will no doubt be a ton of strategy involved in making holes, hills, or pillars at the right time. Killzone 2 - The new trailer for Killzone 2 looks very promising. The footage is different, but the visuals actually look similar to the infamous trailer from E3 2005. The part at the end where the player is attempting to take out the lightning rod goes on for way too long, though. Beautiful Katamari - Aw yea, more rolling crap up, more craziness, more funky music, and more dancing pandas! Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations - It's the third and final game for Phoenix Wright in a starring role. How will it all turn out, how are everyone's fates linked, who is the mysterious new prosecutor in the mask? Wipeout HD - The Wipeout series comes to the PS3. It looks like every other Wipeout but with an HD facelift. That's good, though. Fatal Inertia - If you don't have a PS3 you can go with the anti-gravity racing game for the 360 that was supposed to be a launch title for the PS3. It looks more like a flying racing game than hover racing, though. Along with all the customization options... wait, did they just make a Spider-Man flying car? Yes, I believe they did. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - A new Metroid adventure is just what we all need. It looks like a prettier GameCube title as far as visuals, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Be sure to smile like the weirdo in the trailer every time you crank or whip the Wii-mote. Lost Odyssey - An RPG where you play as an immortal dude. Lost Odyssey could be great or really suck, but the trailer intrigues me. Although, if you're an immortal then you should never see a game over screen, right? Too Human - I wasn't that interested in Too Human, but then I saw this trailer. Actually, it may be the first seven minutes of the game. Hopefully the gameplay and every thing else will match the opening sequence here. Mass Effect - This could be a mass hit or a mass failure. From the trailer, it certainly looks like something I want to play. The main evil alien guy looks totally kick-ass, so let's hope for the best. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - This trailer shows off the new Wii-Zapper and how it will be used in the new RE game. Man, killing off tons of zombies with blood flying everywhere really brings people together. Mario Kart Wii - There wasn't much on the new Mario Kart, except for that it will have worldwide online, battle mode online, and more people to race against at one time. Nintendo is keeping a lid on just how many people can play in one race right now. The Wii wheel attachment also makes its debut. Godzilla: Unleashed - Well, the graphics don't look much better than the previous Godzilla games, the title is stupid, the butt-rock in the trailer is annoying, and Godzilla's roar sounds a little off. However, it's still Godzilla so I'm probably going to love it.
The Eye of Judgment - If the music in this video is any indication, then playing cards is about to get so extreme to the max in your face. What this video really shows us is that we are one step closer to the actual card battling arenas from Yu-Gi-Oh. Damn you Yu-Gi-Oh. Undertow - Hey, here's another shooter for Xbox Live Arcade. What makes this one different is that it's all underwater shooting. This looks like a lot of fun and should be another fine addition to XBLA's growing shooter library. Nucleus - Nucleus is a shooter for the PS3 that has the same gameplay mechanics as Geometry Wars and Blast Factor, but with a twist. You have to push and pull cells to defensive positions to stop viruses from engulfing whatever biological thing you're in. Warriors Orochi - 48 dynasty warriors and 29 samurai warriors have an all out warrior orgy. If you haven't bothered with the Warriors games but are interested in them (like me) this is probably the one to get. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam - When regular warriors just won't cut it, go for Gundams. Melodramatic dialog and awesome Gundam fighting action go so well together. Heavenly Sword - Heavenly Sword looks absolutely amazing visually and action wise. It's about time there is a good female lead that isn't Lara Croft. This will be a must play. Stranglehold - Doves will fly when Inspector Tequila kills a lot of people and it will be glorious! Super Mario Galaxy - How does Mario walk around in outer space without a space suit? Mario has some crazy skills this time. I'm not too hip about that new bee outfit, but regardless it's Mario, and it will rock. Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings - At some point in this sequel to FFXII it looks like you can have an army of Chocobos on your side. I know this focuses more on Vaan and Penelo, but I can't wait for more Balthier and Fran action. Time Crisis 4 - The two coolest gun shooters around come to the PS3 with the new Guncon 3. The Guncon 3 has two directional pads to go with the brand new FPS mode so you can play the game traditionally or as an FPS along with mini games. The graphics look pretty sharp. The plot seems to be very tongue-in-cheek, especially with character names like Lieutenant General Garfield and Captain Rocky. Plus, not only do you get to shoot terrorists, but giant bugs as well. Awesome! Let's hope this game/Guncon combo won't cost $100. Soul Calibur Legends - Okay, the graphics aren't that impressive, but it is a new Soul Calibur adventure. It looks like you can only play as four characters, but you get fight giants. I hope the Wii-mote makes those swooshing sounds when you swoosh, that'd be great. Hell, I'm making those sounds right now and I don't even have a Wii yet. Soul Calibur IV - Here is the real Soul sequel with stunning visuals. The new Soul Calibur IV trailer reveals a new character: a female knight. Tira from SCIII gets a huge makeover. We only know its her because of her sweet hula hoop blade thingy. We'll all have some closure whenever SCIV finally gets released. Resident Evil 5 - The Umbrella Corporation really gets around. Now they're turning people the people of Africa into zombies. There will probably be a lot of zombified animals, which has nearly limitless possibilities with Africa's massive amount of wild life. I just hope this game doesn't come into unneeded controversy since the game has a few white guys shooting a bunch of Africans. They're zombies, folks. Burnout Paradise - This is a trailer full of crashes... gut-wrenchingly gorgeous crashes. Hell, these crashes might be the most beautiful things I've seen in a game.
Halo 3 "Arms Race" - This is a very elaborate, and very cool, live action (yes, LIVE ACTION) video for Halo 3. Maybe. Although it says Halo 3 at the end, it's possible this could be a trailer for some other Halo project. A note to Bungie: More live action Halo, please. Halo 3 - This is the real trailer for Halo 3 and it's almost everything you have hoped for. There is an ass load of vehicle combat, epic-scaled cinemas, Cortana gets a headache, and it seems as though Master Chief and the Arbiter meet up. The graphics may not show off as much as a visual leap as we all hoped, but it's friggin' Halo! 3! I really like the extra piano in the Halo theme as well. This is the Xbox 360 game we've all been waiting for. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - I saved the best for last. This new trailer gives some insight into the story of MGS4 and we finally get to see some of the other characters on screen. The second half of the trailer is a battle between the super cool cyber ninja Raiden and Vamp. Their battle is very stylized and gets a little homo-erotic at times, but it's freaking awesome. The visuals are still as impressive as ever. And yes, it has been delayed until 2008. - Shawn - 07/13/07 |
