Summary

Simon Belmont hunts for Dracula while battling his own inadequacies.

My Thoughts

Castlevania Part 1 is not the first Castlevania game: It’s only the first few levels from the first game. Parts 2 and 3 need to be downloaded at a later time to play, but not enjoy, the full game. Although, being dissected into three parts is only one of Castlevania’s problems.

The main problems with Castlevania are the unresponsive controls and superiorly sluggish gameplay. Walking was slow, jumping was slower, and whipping any monsters when you wanted was almost out of the question. The game fell dangerously close to the unplayable line, but I trudged through.

The visuals are close enough to the NES original. Simon and the monsters are distinguishable as to what they are, but the backgrounds appear exceedingly bland. Only two bosses make an appearance in part 1 with the giant bat and medusa. They were actually easy to dispose of considering I was also battling the slow controls. As far as the alternate weapons go there are only two; the axe and holy water. All the other weapons are MIA. Of course, most of the game is missing as well, so I’m not surprised.

Dracula needs nothing to do with this version of Castlevania because it sucks enough on its own. I don’t recommend downloading this or any other part of this horrific translation of a once good game.

Score: 2.0
